In this keynote lecture, I will show how visualisation techniques in TV documentaries have developed in recent years; the potential they provide for visualising particularly ancient civilisations and relating them to the modern world; the roles such visualisations are coming to play in the language of TV programme-making; and the future potential applications of such visualisation technology.  I will examine how such visualisations can enable both scholars and the wider public to contextualise the ancient past, its place in the present and thus its role as a guide to the future.
